After more than 50 years of serving Prince George and the surrounding region, Carefree Society has announced that it will be winding up its operations and concluding services at the end of June 2026.
This decision follows thoughtful review of the Society’s long-term sustainability and direction. While difficult, it has been made with careful consideration for the future of the organization and the community it has served for decades.
Throughout its history, Carefree Society has played an important role in advancing accessible and inclusive transportation in Prince George. The Society was instrumental in the development of community mobility initiatives, including the early foundations of HandyDART services in the region. More recently, Carefree Society launched a universally accessible tour service designed to help people of all ages and abilities enjoy local attractions, community events, and recreational opportunities.
The Society takes great pride in the impact it has had on improving independence, accessibility, and quality of life for residents throughout Prince George and surrounding communities.
Continuing the Mission
As part of the wind-up process, Carefree Society is selling its building and other remaining assets. The proceeds from these sales will be directed to a qualified donee, with the intention of continuing the Society’s legacy of supporting accessibility, inclusion, and transportation solutions for those who rely on them.
While the Society’s formal operations are coming to a close, the need for accessible transportation remains. Carefree Society recognizes the ongoing importance of community mobility and is encouraged by the efforts of organizations, community leaders, and service providers working to address these needs throughout the region.
The Society remains hopeful that the values it has championed for more than five decades will continue through the work of others dedicated to building a more accessible and inclusive community.
Final Month of Service
Carefree Society’s tour service will continue operating through June 2026. During this final month, riders will still be able to participate in scheduled outings and community events as outlined in our June Events Calendar.
We look forward to spending this final month doing what has always been at the heart of our work: helping people connect with their community, explore new experiences, and enjoy meaningful social opportunities.
